Home >Entertainment > 1 Chris Hughes: It's time to break up Facebook.→Why is it really a bad idea to break up Facebook?
Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes presents compelling reasons for why Facebook and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, are so powerful. Hughes said that because billions of people are using Facebook, the power of this social network is so strong that it needs to be tied. Hughes’s proposal is justified. But while his idea of splitting Facebook into independent companies (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) is emotionally more acceptable, it has huge flaws. Splitting Facebook will create three (or more) smaller public entities, all of which will feel the pressure of growth. These “baby Facebooks” grew up in the same culture that grew at all costs, but now they act on their own, without the unified influence and goals of the parent company. Moreover, depending on how it is split, Zuckerberg may still be the major shareholder behind them.
